Mohair is the fiber shorn from long-haired angora goats. Angoras have a single coat, unlike other fiber animals like kashmir goats that have a layer of coarse guard hairs on top of an inner coat of down. As a result, good mohair has a longer staple length than other luxury fibers and it is very durable. Angora goats’ fiber becomes coarser as they age, so the first shearings from kid goats are always the finest. Mohair is sometimes called the “diamond fiber” because of its exceptional sheen: it refracts light almost like silk. Mohair is also distinct from wool and other fibers because it has almost no crimp. It is straight and smooth, which is why it is referred to as “hair.” Mohair makes durable and intensely lustrous yarns.
